The 艸 radical is a pictograph resembling two grass stems. In ancient China 艸 and the character for 草 "grass" were used interchangeably. 艸 is only used as a component character for more complex characters and is almost always found in its top radical form: 艹 .
艸 can be commonly found in words referring to plants such as “草” (cǎo) "grass, 花 (huā) “flower”, 蔬 (shū) “vegetable”, and 茎 (jīng) “stalk”.
